Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of some extra chromosomes in the cells of the body. Down syndrome is not a disease and is not inherited. It happens randomly at conception. Everyone with Down syndrome has some degree of learning disability. Some special physical characteristics are the same in individuals with Down syndrome, and they are more prone to some medical problems.
